Heavy items such as tyres, wheel hubs, cylinders, buckets, pumps and structural parts must be moved regularly between storage and repair bays. The mine needed a telehandler that could handle these loads and provide reach for maintenance support tasks.
Open-pit mining machinery is large and heavy, so maintenance often involves lifting bulky parts to significant heights or over wide machines. Access points can be difficult to reach directly with traditional forklifts.
Workshop and yard surfaces may include rough concrete, compacted gravel and transitions to ramped areas. Equipment must maintain traction and stability while travelling with heavy loads.
Work at height around trucks, excavators and conveyors requires safe access platforms and controlled lifting of tools and materials. Wind, dust and temperature extremes add to operational challenges.
Maintenance schedules are critical to production, so delays in moving parts or setting up work platforms can directly impact equipment availability and mine output.
The mine selected the HAMAC HT5018 telehandler, a 5 ton, 18 m high-reach machine with a four-section telescopic boom and 4×4 drive. Its three steering modes (front-wheel, four-wheel and crab steering) improve manoeuvrability around large machines and tight yard spaces.
The HT5018 is equipped with self-levelling forks, hydraulic quick coupler and stabilizers, allowing quick changes between forks, buckets, lifting hooks and work platforms. This versatility supports a range of maintenance support tasks.
In daily operation, the HT5018 moves palletized parts, tyres and components from laydown areas and parts stores to repair bays and parked machinery. It positions loads near cranes or directly lifts items into place where appropriate.
The telehandler supports maintenance teams by lifting work platforms or man baskets to give access to elevated areas on haul trucks, shovels or conveyor structures. Its boom reach allows technicians to work safely at height with tools and spare parts.
When heavy tools, welding equipment or hydraulic units are needed on different sides of a machine, the HT5018 transports and positions them quickly, reducing manual handling and setup time.
Outside the workshop, the telehandler assists with tasks such as handling small structural components, moving service modules and supporting infrastructure maintenance around the open-pit site.
Operators are trained on HT5018 load charts, boom positioning and the use of stabilizers and attachments in a mining environment. Loads are kept within the 5 ton rating, and outreach is managed to maintain stability.
Daily inspections cover tyres, boom structure, hydraulic system, attachments and stabilizers, with attention to dust, impacts and heavy-duty use. Work platforms and lifting hooks are checked and used according to relevant standards and site procedures.
Maintenance tasks involving work at height follow site permit-to-work processes, with defined exclusion zones and communication between operators and technicians. Weather and ground conditions are monitored, and lifting operations are adjusted when necessary.
Using the HAMAC HT5018 telehandler improves the flexibility and efficiency of workshop maintenance support at the open-pit mine. Heavy parts, tools and platforms can be moved and positioned quickly without relying solely on fixed cranes.
